Bald Eagle


General Description:
  • one of the largest birds of prey in the world.
  • black line behind both of the eyes.
  • there is a black band on the tip of the tail.
  • they can be confused with golden eagles at a young age of about 3 or 4 years.
  • can weigh up to 17 pounds.
  • 7 to 7 and a half foot wing span.
  • the farther north you go you will find larger bald eagles.

Habitat:
  • Bald eagles generally nest on high cliffs or trees overlooking large bodies of water or rivers.
  • they usually do not live anywhere near human facilities of developments.

Why are they threatened?
  • Water pollution
  • human development destroying habitats

  • DDT infections

Reproduction:
  • the females lay 1 to 3 eggs per year
  • 35 day incubation periods
  • the young are sexually mature at 5 to 6 years of age
